Most trials end before people find the feature that would have kept them. An onboarding quest gives every new account a short, clear path to that moment.
Quests that work
Get set up, one by one so each step builds on the last:
- 1Connect your data source (
integration.connectedat least 1) - 2Create your first report (
report.createdat least 1) - 3Invite a teammate (
teammate.invitedat least 1)
The player confirms completion with a Claim reward button, which unlocks a perk, say extended-trial for 14 days.
Power user, for accounts with plan = pro (a trait you send with identify): use any three of five advanced features. Reward: the Power user badge.
Team player, which appears only after Get set up is finished: invite three teammates (teammate.invited at least 3).
Why it fits
- Traits let one project serve every plan: show quests to trial, pro or enterprise accounts only.
- Perks are entitlements your app already understands. Check
extended-trialthe same way you check a plan feature. - Versions let product managers improve onboarding every week without breaking it for accounts that are halfway through.
Metrics to send
Track the actions that predict retention in your product, not every click. Five to ten metrics usually cover a good onboarding.
